Frenkie de Jong, who was pursued by Manchester United during the “restless” summer of last year, says he anticipates staying at Barcelona for the upcoming campaign.
The midfielder claims that despite United’s pursuit, he never changed his mind about wanting to remain at the Nou Camp and that he was unconcerned by the rumors. Prior to negotiations breaking down over a wage deferral dispute, the Reds and the playmaker had reached an agreement in principle.
While publicly resolute about staying in Spain, the player was secretly amenable to the thought of reuniting with his former Ajax manager. Although Ten Hag has Mason Mount in mind after agreeing to personal terms, he is still open to a De Jong transfer.
Voetbal International l recently inquired once more about the Netherlands international’s future plans at Barcelona. In reference to United’s pursuit, he remarked, “That has been clear to me, also last summer when things were restless for a while.”
“I always knew I wanted to stay in Barcelona, which is why last summer wasn’t as hard for me. Additionally, I had just extended my contract [in 2020], so I always felt in charge and free to make my own decisions.
“For that reason, I decided not to worry about it. I’m happy where I am and anticipate continuing to play for Barcelona in the upcoming season.
Sergio Busquets is retiring, and De Jong, whose contract extends through 2026, is likely to replace him as the pivotal lead midfielder. Xavi wants to keep the Dutchman.
Ten Hag lauded De Jong, saying: “In Spain, Frenkie became even better.” Ten Hag made the remarks about De Jong prior to United’s Europa League match in February. He is an excellent athlete.
He always has time, and he plays from the back. It was enjoyable to collaborate with him. Any team would benefit from having him on it. He possesses a special quality.
