The Reds are hoping to add up to two more midfielders to their roster after already acquiring Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton on a five-year deal for £55 million.
In order to improve his midfield options for the upcoming season, Jurgen Klopp may have to replace James Milner, Naby Keita, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, all of whom left Anfield when their contracts ended.
Veiga has surfaced as a top target, according to Fabrizio Romano, who claims the Merseysiders are keeping an eye on the 21-year-old La Liga star this summer. His £34 million release clause is seen to work in the Reds’ favour as they look to bolster their midfield.
Chelsea, who lost out on Sporting midfielder Manuel Ugarte to Paris Saint-Germain, might present fierce competition for Veiga’s services, but Klopp is eager to land his man before the team reconvenes on July 8 for preseason.
After a dismal season, Jorg Schmadtke, the newly appointed sporting director of Liverpool, will have a difficult time attracting elite players to the club this summer.
Reinforcement
Several midfielders, including Mason Mount, James Ward-Prowse, Khephren Thuram, Manu Kone, and Ryan Gravenberch, have been connected with moves to Liverpool.
The Reds and OGC Nice midfielder Thuram have verbally agreed to personal terms ahead of a potential transfer to England, and they are still negotiating additional signings as they want to assemble a team that can contend for titles next season and return to the Champions League after missing out the previous year.
Liverpool has begun negotiations to sign Veiga, according to Fabrizio Romano, according to the Liverpool Echo and the That’s Football YouTube programme. The Italian journalist claims that numerous Premier League teams are keeping an eye on him, so it’s a free-for-all to sign him.
“Gabri Veiga from Celta Vigo is one of the players Liverpool are monitoring,” Romano said as quoted by Liverpool Echo.
“Really appreciated by many Premier League clubs. There is an open race, but this is a very interesting player with a €40m [£34m] release clause included into his contract, he’s one to watch.”
After putting up a strong performance for Celta Vigo previous season, Veiga has established himself as one of Spain’s top young players. On the penultimate day of the season, he scored twice in their 2-1 victory over champions Barcelona to prevent relegation from La Liga.
The Spanish midfielder played 40 times in all competitions for Celta Vigo, scoring 11 goals and dishing out four assists.
