At Old Trafford, there have been rumors of two significant contract extensions for Marcus Rashford and David de Gea for some time now.
According to Fabrizio Romano’s report from Monday, Rashford is prepared to accept a massive offer to replace Ronaldo as the club’s highest-paid player.
If Rashford signs a long-term contract, he will reportedly earn £375,000 per week. In doing so, he will overtake De Gea as the highest-paid player at the team.
De Gea presently makes £375,000 per week, although conversations about a new contract with Man Utd have included the disclaimer that his base wage would be reduced.
United decided not to exercise the one-year contract option for the Spaniard. De Gea will consequently become a free agent on June 30.
United are looking to recruit a quality custodian this summer, and Dean Henderson has been extensively linked with a move to Nottingham Forest.
The assumption was that the new player would act as a superior De Gea backup. However, a shocking story from the Mirror claims that the new acquisition would take De Gea’s place as the team’s starting custodian after 12 years with the organisation.
According to the tabloid, United are now giving priority to bringing in a new first-choice custodian this summer and are ready for David de Gea to leave.
De Gea has won the Man Utd Player of the Year award four times and led all goalkeepers in the Premier League with 17 shutouts this year.
While mistakes with the gloves also crept into his game, his inadequacies with the ball at his feet were cruelly exposed, most notably in the Europa League.
According to The Mirror, United now sees the club’s agreement to pay De Gea £375,000 per week as a “error.”
It’s been said that United are now “actively seeking” to replace the 32-year-old and have “stepped up” their interest in securing a replacement rather than continuing negotiations over a new term.
Two elite athletes are targets for Man United.
The Mirror lists four names in relation to who United will sign to replace De Gea. Two of them, though, can be instantly ruled out as choices.
David Raya and Bart Verbruggen from Brentford are a part of the group. Raya, according to the Mirror, is “no longer thought to be an option,” while Verbuggen is reportedly close to signing with Brighton, according to Fabrizio Romano.
Tottenham, who have agreed upon personal terms with Raya, now have the door wide open. According to the rumour, United will instead use Diogo Costa of FC Porto or Andre Onana of Inter Milan.
Onana, 27, was the league’s top performer in the Champions League this season in terms of shutouts and goals against. Through his outstanding performances at the club level for Porto, Costa, 23, has cemented his position as Portugal’s top player.
Costa’s current contract contains a release clause worth €75m (approx. £65m). Onana is expected to fetch around £50m if Inter greenlight his sale this summer.
