To get more regular playing time, Donny van de Beek has acknowledged he may quit Manchester United this summer.
Van van Beek only made two league appearances for United last season, and he missed the rest of the season due to a significant knee injury he suffered in a 3-0 victory against Bournemouth in January.
When Van de Beek moved to the club from Ajax in 2020, there were big expectations for him. However, the midfielder has found it difficult to become a regular member of the first squad, and he may leave before the transfer window closes.
Van de Beek scored in his first preseason game against Lyon on Wednesday afternoon after only recently recovering from a knee injury. He then spoke to reporters in the mixed zone at Murrayfield.
When asked about his future, the 26-year-old was open and acknowledged that he might leave Old Trafford.
“At the moment, I’m unsure of my future. I try to push as hard as I can because I’ve recovered from my injury and am now healthy, so I play my first minutes after working out for a few weeks,” Van de Beek said.
“Since anything might happen at any time, it’s difficult to predict what my future holds right now. Let’s see what happens. In football, you never know, especially with me.
When asked if the door at Old Trafford was still open for him, Van de Beek replied, “Yeah, but it’s also a possibility that I move, so everything is open. Where my future is now is difficult to predict.
“I’m pressing on and concentrating on getting as fit as I can.”
Van de Beek, who cost United £35 million in 2020, has made just 60 appearances and has two goals and two assists.
