After learning that Moises Caicedo had turned down Liverpool in favor of Chelsea, Jamie Carragher quickly revised his assessment of the midfielder’s £110 million transfer fee.
The rumors that the Reds had reached a club-record agreement to sign the Ecuadorian from Brighton were confirmed by Jurgen Klopp on Friday.
In their pursuit of Caicedo, the Seagulls have turned down a number of Chelsea proposals. Caicedo has recently tried to force the move to west London.
However, other rumors have since surfaced claiming that the 21-year-old rejected Liverpool in favor of joining the Blues, as they prepare a new pitch to persuade Brighton to sell.
During the chaos, Anfield icon Carragher gave his opinion on Caicedo being on Merseyside, calling it “great business” in light of the sales of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson as well as the acquisitions of Alexis MacAllister.
“£110M is a big price for Caicedo, but Liverpool had to pay big as clubs knew they were desperate,” he wrote in a tweet.
But it’s great business to spend £145 million on two outstanding young players and $52 million on the sale of two of your older guys.
Only a few hours later, when news of Caicedo choosing Stamford Bridge broke, Sky Sports analyst Carragher abruptly changed his tune and attacked co-owner Todd Boehly, probably in an effort to rile up Chelsea supporters ahead of the two teams’ Premier League matchup on Sunday.
“£110M is a ridiculous amount of money to pay for a 21-year-old,” the man asserted. “Boehly has lost his mind yet again.”
There may be many more turns in this affair because Chelsea and Brighton still haven’t agreed on a cost by Friday lunchtime.
