Mohamed Salah has now outscored Steven Gerrard for Liverpool goals, thanks to his goal against Bournemouth on Saturday.
The Reds forward took the spot kick at Anfield during the 3-1 victory over the Cherries, and although Neto stopped his initial attempt, Salah reacted quickly to score on the rebound and give Liverpool the lead at the time. With the goal, the current Reds star has now scored 187 goals for his team, while club legend Gerrard’s total will always be 186.
It’s not like Gerrard, the former captain of Liverpool didn’t see it coming; he has already spoken about Salah’s incredible goal-scoring form. The former England international even admitted that he hoped Salah will surpass his Liverpool goal total in the Champions League.
Even if Gerrard’s comments were specifically regarding his European form, his point is still valid. Gerrard was insistent that he wanted Salah to surpass his number when he was speaking in late 2020, shortly after the Egypt international had just scored against Atalanta to tie his Champions League record.
The former Rangers manager argued that records should always be broken. It was inevitable, therefore I was thrilled to see Mo Salah match my Liverpool scoring mark in Europe last night. Sincerely, I believe he will continue to damage my reputation, and I sincerely hope he does.
Gerrard was the manager of Alfredo Morelos at the time of his laudatory evaluation; Morelos had, by coincidence, just the week before surpassed Rangers’ Champions League goal record.
Gerrard continued, “Alfredo Morelos and Mo Salah go about their business always hungry for goals.” For Liverpool, I had a slightly different role to play. Nothing is more satisfying than watching someone attempt a record and then destroy it.
Salah scored twice to become Liverpool’s all-time leading scorer in the Premier League after the Reds’ 7-0 thumping of ferocious rivals Manchester United. The Egyptian was proud of himself at the time.
When asked about the record, he responded to Sky Sports, “It’s pretty special, I can’t lie. This record has been on my mind ever since I first arrived here. I believe that after my first year, I was constantly after it, so to break it tonight against United with that outcome was incredible. I’m going to celebrate with my family at home, drink some chamomile tea, and then go to bed.
Another example of Salah’s amazing talent is his ability to surpass the goal total of a player of Steven Gerrard’s skill while also taking into account the former midfielder’s position at Anfield. Not many people will likely be happier for the 31-year-old Egyptian than Gerrard.
