The debut of Moises Caicedo for Chelsea against West Ham United was a “horror,” according to Jamie Carragher.
West Ham won the London derby 3-1 when Lucas Paqueta’s penalty kick was conceded by Moises Caicedo, who entered the game as a substitute in the second half.
Carragher, though, was not particularly pleased with the midfielder’s overall performance.
The Liverpool veteran commented on Caicedo live on Sky Sports after the 21-year-old was introduced: “Caicedo has come in and he’s actually found it difficult. He has one more passed by him there.
Carragher added, “He’s had a bit of a nightmare since he came on, you have to say,” after Caicedo awarded the penalty.
Chelsea’s defeat was not due to Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo’s debut was undoubtedly one to forget in the end. However, Chelsea already appeared defeated at the time he conceded the penalty.
Fernandez’s missed penalty and possibly some shaky defending at the back, which Michail Antonio took advantage of to give West Ham the lead by a score of 2-1, was the Blues’ downfall today.
It is quite disappointing following Chelsea’s encouraging performance against Liverpool the previous Saturday. In the future, Pochettino’s team cannot afford to let performances like the one at the London Stadium turn into a reoccurring theme if they are to have any chance of placing in the top four. If they do, this season will resemble the previous one a lot.
Caicedo is still in its early stages. However, there will already be a lot of attention due to his price tag. He needs to perform significantly better against Luton Town.
Chelsea will think they have a good chance against a freshly promoted team at home. However, if the Blues continue to defend as they did tonight, they will have a lot of problems.
