City claims that their treble-winning manager, who has been dealing with the issue for some time, flew to Barcelona on Tuesday for an “emergency” but “routine” operation.
Guardiola will stay in Barcelona while recovering, therefore Juanma Lillo, City’s assistant manager, will take charge of this weekend’s game against Sheffield United and next Sunday’s meeting against Fulham.
After the international break, City anticipates Guardiola returning to the bench for the match against West Ham on September 16.
According to a statement from Manchester City, Pep Guardiola underwent a routine procedure today for a back issue.
“The Manchester City manager, who has recently been dealing with significant back discomfort, recently traveled to Barcelona for an urgent procedure by Dr. Mireia Illueca. After a successful surgery, Pep will now recover and undergo rehabilitation in Barcelona.
“While he is away, assistant manager Juanma Lillo will be in charge of the first team’s coaching on the practice pitch and take over the touchline duties until Pep’s return.
“He is anticipated to make a comeback during the upcoming international break. We at Manchester City wish Pep a quick recovery and look forward to his return to the city shortly.
