Manchester City have announced the signing of Belgium winger Jeremy Doku after agreeing a €65 million (£56m/$70m) fee with Rennes.
Doku signed a five-year contract to join the Premier League champions from Ligue 1 team Rennes, where he spent three seasons and 10 goals and 12 assists in all competitions. After defender Josko Gvardiol from RB Leipzig and midfielder Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea, the winger is City’s third acquisition of the summer.
Doku was hired to replace Riyad Mahrez, who left City to join Al-Ahli after five years and a plethora of championships at the Etihad Stadium. Cole Palmer, who has had a solid start to the season but is likely to see less playing time following City’s push to the treble, may suffer as a result of his arrival. Palmer played a minimal role in City’s march to the trophy.
“This is a great day for me, both personally and professionally,” they declared. Doku told City’s official website, “Manchester City is the best team in the world, therefore to be joining them is something really significant for me and my family. “As a young player, I still have a lot to learn and get better at. I’ll become a much better player after working with Pep and his staff and playing with these working-class players. I am certain about it. It was great to watch City last season. The Triple Crown is the football world’s toughest feat, and they accomplished it. It is beyond thrilling to be a part of this team, as you can only imagine. I am eager to get going. I’m hoping I can please my supporters.
