The 21-year-old forward was permitted to sign for the Madrid-based team on a loan contract for the duration of the season and is now hoping to resurrect his career in Spain. The former England international is expected to finish the season in Spain, despite a stipulation in the contract that would allow a recall to United in January.

Greenwood will be hoping that a stint in LA Liga may help him rebuild his reputation as a person as well as a footballer. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, the athlete is determined to seize that second chance.
He hasn’t played in a professional game of football since his arrest in January 2022, which brought his life and football career to an abrupt end.
Even though the Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against him in February of this year as a result of the absence of a key witness, Greenwood was unable to resume his profession right away since United was conducting its investigation into him.
Their attempts to reintegrate him ultimately resulted in a U-turn due to strong public opposition, led by our own Football 365, which made it impossible for the player to play for United once more.
And after a last-minute dash for his services, Getafe was ultimately successful in securing him. Many people are still upset with the La Liga team for conducting their raid. The small LaLiga survivors were happy to take a chance by signing the contentious forward, as this story describes in detail.
Mason Greenwood is not expected to return to Man Utd.
The La Liga team merely recognized an opportunity they could not pass up. Despite being only 40 years old and having only been founded in 1983, the club has a difficult time competing in La Liga, especially given that they are the poor third cousin of the capital city.
The opportunity to sign Greenwood, though, has led to him already being referred to as the Getafe GOAT. Nevertheless, they managed to survive in La Liga.
Simply put, Getafe recognized their opportunity and seized it.
And while the move offers Greenwood the option to restart his or her career, it also gives United a good chance to obtain a return on a once-rated asset worth more than £40 million that they were anticipated to write off just a year ago.
At this point, it remains unlikely he will ever play for the Red Devils again. But what United hope the year in Spain will do is show some big clubs that Greenwood is worth investing in – the Getafe PR campaign around his arrival is all monitored carefully by United – and will ultimately help the Premier League side gain a long-term return on the player they have coached since the age of six.
Branded a PR nightmare for certain clubs who all looked at him, The year in Getafe will, United hopes, show to those who thought twice about him, that here is a talented player, regardless of the controversy, worth signing.
The early signs are promising thus far. The Getafe coaches are allegedly very impressed with his dedication, fitness, and desire to get back into the game. And according to The Sun, their original strategy to ease him in has been changed. So much so that their coach, Jose Bordalas, might even give him a complete debut when they play Osasuna on Sunday to open their season.
The star’s match fitness is not too far off expectations, according to Getafe, even though he has only been there 10 days and hasn’t played senior football in 20 months.
Getafe sporting director is willing to take a chance on Greenwood
Explaining their reasons for signing him, Getafe’s sporting director Ruben Reyes is only thinking about what Greenwood can do on the pitch.
“We knew he was a player who was out there. Working on it, gathering information bit by bit, we saw there could be a possibility and in the end, we were able to convince him to come here, to trust in us,” Reyes said. “We spoke to his family, to his dad, for a long time. We’re very satisfied.”
Reyes insists Getafe is planning to have Greenwood for the “whole season” despite stressing there were ‘conditions attached’ to the loan.
Reyes responded, “There is nothing to say because the person who had to speak has done so, and that’s a judge [sic]: the highest authority. ” When asked if there were any concerns with the agreement, Reyes said: “There are none. We signed guys that were available to sign, as is our practice.
Reyes also maintains that his team had no worries about a backlash from the public and that they are under no obligation to shield the athlete from such consequences.
“There is no need for us to handle anything,” he continued. “A judge has spoken. Just like Diego Rico and Oscar Rodriguez, we’ve signed a football player, and that’s it.
Getafe will play away matches against Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao after Sunday’s home game against Osasuna.
Greenwood is contracted to United until the summer of 2025.
