In defense of his choice to start Ben Chilwell in Chelsea’s attacking front three, Mauricio Pochettino.
Prior to the international break, Chilwell participated in a wasteful attack on the left side of his team’s 1-0 home loss against Nottingham Forest.
With four points from their opening four games, Chelsea is under pressure to beat Bournemouth on the road on Sunday.
Pochettino said of Chilwell’s new position as a forward: “I know Ben is a full-back, but he can help the team in many situations.
“In my opinion, Ben Chilwell generated more opportunities for the squad to score than any other player. Ben played in a position akin to that for the national team, in my opinion.
Chilwell started the preseason as left back, but because to Christopher Nkunku’s injury, he has had to go up.
Pochettino continued, saying: “All the coaching staff feel disappointed when you lose players and, of course, it impacts the squad since they were two players in our strategy. The loss of Nkunku and Carney Chukwuemeka has upset the balance of our team.
We had to accept it and adjust, which is why occasionally we tried players in other positions to try to find the ideal balance.
