The former Aston Villa striker claimed Dominik Szoboszlai was one of the “signings of the summer” in an exclusive interview with Football Insider, but he urged fellow midfielder Alexis Mac Allister to “wake up.”
Liverpool defeated West Ham 3-1 on Sunday (September 24) to improve to 16 out of a possible 18 points in the Premier League.
Even though they just lost Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate to suspension and injury, respectively, their only lost points came in the season-opening draw away at Chelsea.
Both athletes are now back in the lineup for the actual game.
The Premier League was last won by Liverpool in the 2019–20 campaign, when they defeated Man City by 18 points and captured the trophy for the first time since 1990.
This season, the Reds will also compete in the Europa League, and they defeated LASK in their opening group game last week.
“I think Liverpool can definitely challenge Arsenal and Man City,” Agbonlahor said to Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury. At the moment, their team is looking excellent.
“From a defensive standpoint, that is the one question I have right now.
“Szoboszlai was one of the summer’s signings. He moves so quickly for a central midfielder, I can’t believe it.
He has a lot of energy and is quite skilled technically.
“Mac Allister must get out of bed. He isn’t performing to the level we saw him perform at the World Cup.
“I believe Liverpool needs to get Van Dijk and Konate back up to speed and revert to that defensive unit that people used to be afraid of,” said the analyst.
Teams were afraid to tackle them when they saw the back four because they were so terrifying.
