Enzo Fernandez’s use as an offensive midfielder under Mauricio Pochettino has cost Chelsea.
Stan Collymore, a former attacker for Aston Villa and Liverpool, holds this opinion and feels Fernandez is not the ideal kind of player to play as a number 10.
After winning the World Cup with Argentina, Fernandez, 22, was signed from Benfica for a staggering £107 million (Sky Sports) in January and was anticipated to play a key role in the Blues’ recovery.
Although it is obvious that the South American is a tremendously good player, he has yet to fully exhibit his talent and duplicate his international form.
What has Enzo Fernandez’s critic Stan Collymore said?
Collymore thinks a large part of that is because his domestic boss insisted on using him as an attack-minded creative midfielder rather than as the box-to-box player he is.
In an exclusive interview, Collymore predicted that Mauricio Pochettino would ask Enzo Fernandez to play in behind the forward again against Fulham.
I think highly of Pochettino. Despite being a top manager, I believe he is handling Fernandez incorrectly. Why everyone is so fixated on using him as a number 10 is beyond me. He’s not a number ten.
“Fernandez performs at his highest level when given a deeper role and the opportunity to move freely between boxes. He’s currently being confined to a relatively narrow portion of the field, which is limiting his best qualities.
