Mason Greenwood, a loanee from Manchester United who joined Getafe on the final day of the transfer window, has made his first public statement after scoring his first goal for the La Liga team. The 22-year-old scored in the 2-2 tie between the Spanish team and Celta Vigo on Sunday night, reflecting on the game in a post on social media.

Within two minutes of the game’s start, Borja Mayoral had given the home team Getafe the lead, but Jonathan Bamba pulled Greenwood’s team level. Domingos Duarte’s dismissal in the 29th minute reduced Getafe to 10 men, but four minutes later Greenwood gave his team a second lead before Jorgen Stand Larsen equalized just before halftime.
Greenwood’s goal came after Mayoral successfully pulled down a long ball that had been shot up to him. Mayoral then powered and sped past two Celta defenders before sliding the ball across to the back post, where Greenwood was waiting to score.
Following the tie, Greenwood posted on Instagram, saying: “Happy to score my first goal for @getafecf amazing team spirit to come away from the game with a point.” Three images from the game, including two of Greenwood rejoicing with his new teammates, are captioned
It was Greenwood’s first goal for United since January 2021, in a 3-0 victory away at Brentford, but even though he merely left on loan, that might have been his last strike for the Red Devils. After a protracted inquiry that was wrapped up in August, the club officially announced that he would be leaving Old Trafford.
After being detained on attempted rape and assault charges last year, Greenwood is hoping to resurrect his football career. The Crown Prosecution Service dismissed the accusations in February.
Greenwood has played five times for Getafe so far, including two starts. He has already contributed an assist to his new team while also receiving a reprieve for his international career.
Despite having played for England once, Gareth Southgate makes it seem doubtful that he will play again. However, he is also eligible for Jamaica, and their head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson has made hints about a potential call-up in the future.
When asked if Greenwood would play for Jamaica, Hallgrimsson responded, “We would like to have the best talent on our team. “If he gets his former fitness and former levels, then for sure he would have that level to help Jamaica.”
