Manchester United legend Roy Keane has already spoken out about Graham Potter, who has been linked with the job of replacing Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag has been under more and more strain in the past several days following United’s confirmed elimination from Europe on Tuesday night.
United’s 1-0 loss against Bayern Munich at Old Trafford means that, along with Newcastle, two English teams finished the season at the bottom of their Champions League group. A victory would have only advanced United to the Europa League play-off round.
Ten Hag will now have to manage an away journey to Anfield to play Liverpool while attempting to put the horrible memories of their 7-0 thumping in March behind him.
Although United supporters aren’t anticipating a win, concerns of a serious setback are being raised by a defensive injury issue.
As per The Sun, potential minority stakeholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has had discussions with former Chelsea manager Potter, and he is the front-runner to succeed Ten Hag in the event of Potter’s dismissal.
In the summer, Potter was connected to the open position at Ratcliffe/INEOS-owned Nice, but Francesco Farioli ended up taking the position instead. He is still unemployed despite turning down approaches from the Sweden national team, Lyon, Rangers, and Leicester.
Additionally, he declined an offer from Stoke, a Championship team that fired Alex Neil, the former manager of Preston North End and Norwich, last week.
Potter’s arrival at Old Trafford might cause a rift among supporters because the Englishman was fired by Chelsea earlier this year.
Nonetheless, a lot of people would blame his troubles at Stamford Bridge on the massive roster turnover that occurred there, which saw many key players from the team’s 2020–21 Champions League victory under Thomas Tuchel leave.
Potter gained success with Swedish teams Ostersunds, Swansea, and Brighton before rising to the pinnacle of English football. He also instilled a positive team culture and style of play.
Speaking following Potter’s appointment by Chelsea in the previous year, Premier League great Keane complimented the Englishman’s efforts while bringing up one issue that United needed to be aware of.
“I like Graham Potter at Chelsea,” he stated to Sky Sports. I enjoy the way he is portrayed in the media and the way his teams perform.
“I’m happy he has an opportunity to play for a major team like Chelsea. Give the man a chance; there’s a lot of speculation about whether or not he can handle a large club and huge egos and everything. He’s made a great adjustment.
“Every time he speaks in interviews, I think he comes across really well.”
