FC Barcelona’s goal for the winter transfer window is to add a new midfield player after acquiring Vitor Roque.
The Blaugrana are looking for a new midfield player to bolster the squad in January, especially as the team is trailing in the La Liga title race due to Gavi’s injury and Oriol Romeu’s poor performances.
According to reports, Barça is searching for a player with enough experience to join the team in the middle of the season and have an impact. The player should be able to play as both a No. 6 and a No. 8.
However, unless there is a significant money stream from someplace, their FFP issues prevent them from making a significant investment in the new signing.
Taking all of this into consideration, Mundo Deportivo reports that Barcelona has the following seven midfield stars on their roster for the upcoming month.
Aleix Garcia (Girona)
The Girona midfielder, 26, is the most recent player to be connected to Barcelona. According to rumors, the team is willing to consider Oriol Romeu and Pablo Torre as trade-offs.
For his part, Garcia has previously said that, given the opportunity, he would adore playing for Barça. However, a move would be difficult to pull off given Girona’s title challenge this season and a contract that expires in 2026.
Amadou Onana (Everton)
With Everton, the Belgian midfield force is establishing himself in the Premier League and drawing interest from other elite teams, including Barcelona.
However, considering that Amadou Onana’s contract with the Toffees expires in 2027, signing him might cost Barça more than €50 million.
Arthur Vermeeren (Royal Antwerp)
Arthur Vermeeren is another talented midfield player from Belgium who has been linked to Barcelona for a significant portion of 2023. The club even got a close look at him during their group stage match against Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League.
Vermeeren isn’t a top target in Catalonia, though, and the Premier League is also showing interest in him, so it’s possible he won’t be coming.
Youssouf Fofana (AS Monaco)
When searching for a new midfield player in January, Barcelona appears to have found a nice fit in the 24-year-old midfielder from AS Monaco and France.
Fofana has his best years ahead of him, is physically powerful, has some experience at this level, and can play in a variety of positions in the middle of the park.
Andre (Fluminense)
Andre, a rising star in Brazilian football, came very close to signing with Liverpool during the summer, but that deal fell through. The 22-year-old has since advanced to the FIFA Club World Cup finals and won the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense.
Deco is a fan of Andre since he can play as an interior or a pivot, but once more, Barça is not currently prioritizing the Brazilian midfielder.
Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United)
Bruno Guimaraes, another Brazilian on the list, has long drawn interest from Barcelona, but any transfer in January is all but unlikely given that he recently agreed to a long-term deal with Newcastle United.
The Brazilian would cost a lot of money to sign, and rumors have it that Barça would trade a star to raise the money to sign him—albeit in the summer. But for now, it’s off limits.
Lucas Bergvall (Djurgardens)
This one, however, is more focused on the future; 17-year-old Lucas Bergvall is drawing a lot of interest from Barcelona following his breakout performance at Djurgardens in Sweden.
Although it’s unclear if Bergvall will be able to move in January, it has been rumored that an initial bid of €4 million has already been offered.
