According to reports, Man Utd has terminated Sergio Reguilon’s one-year loan from Tottenham.
The 27-year-old Spanish left-back played in 12 games for Erik ten Hag in all competitions. Luke Shaw, the team’s first choice, and backup Tyrell Malacia have both missed much of the season due to injuries.
The Red Devils have decided to exercise the break option in Shaw’s loan move as anticipated, even though he recently returned to the team and still has an injury. Malacia is still out.
That’s according to The Athletic, which reports that Reguilon will now return to Tottenham, who are dealing with their own defensive injury issue. What the Spurs do with him is still up in the air.
Ange Postecoglou seems to like Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies, but overall he’s short at the back due to the injuries to Christian Romero and Micky van de Ven.
There is no restriction on how many clubs a player can be registered with during a season according to FIFA, therefore he is free to move to another loan.
It won’t take Reguilon long to return to Old Trafford if he is reintegrated into the team, since United’s next Premier League matchup is against Spurs on January 14.
He is United’s second departure of the January transfer window. On New Year’s Day, Donny van de Beek left to join Eintracht Frankfurt for the rest of the season.
United now has the chance to sign a new loan player, which may have been the driving force behind the choice. Clubs in the Premier League are limited to having two at a time.
The other temporary signing they made in the summer was Sofyan Amrabat, who also had a buyout option under the Fiorentina contract.
