Man City player Jack Grealish discusses the “simple” advice Pep Guardiola offered him that revolutionized his style of play.
Jack Grealish made a £100 million transfer from Aston Villa to City. He has two Premier League championships, as well as honours from the FA Cup, UEFA Super Cup, Club World Cup, Champions League, and FA Cup.
It’s evident that he is a very different player than the one we witnessed at Villa, where he was given more leeway.
Grealish is told not to throw the ball away at City and to stay high and wide.
Because of his focus on ball retention, Grealish takes fewer chances on the wing; but, in a recent interview, he revealed some advice from Guardiola that has benefited him on the game.
Although the England international prefers to enter the game from the left flank, he has been told to initiate contact with his left foot since it will propel him forward.
It’s something that I have just recently been aware of. “Pep genuinely informed me about this,” he remarked during an Ellevate coaching session.
“It automatically takes me back, but if I’m catching the ball with my right foot and I’m getting it off you, then using my right foot is a good touch.
“I’m going back, the defender can just leap on me. I’m not left-footed, yet if I can go to my left, I’ll go forward automatically.
“It’s so simple and something you don’t really notice and when someone like Pep Guardiola tells you about it you take it onboard.”
Grealish has scored three goals in 22 games this season, but unlike his lengthy stints last year, he is not a given to start because of the addition of Jeremy Doku, who enjoys dribbling past defenders.
Additionally, Guardiola addressed his No. 10 after Doku recorded four assists against Bournemouth.
“I want Jack to play well and to be furious. Then, be upset with Doku for missing the previous two games, Guardiola said to BBC Sport.
“This is how the consistency at that level is kept up. Everyone is necessary to us. For us, it was all determined by Jack’s performance at Old Trafford, which offered us greater poise.”
