This summer window, Arsenal has supposedly made an initial bid to sign Getafe striker Borja Mayoral, according to The Sun.
By adding a new striker this month, it appears that the Gunners have been considering bolstering their front line. Recently, a number of names, including Ivan Toney, have been connected to a move to the Emirates Stadium.
The North London team is apparently unable to make significant purchases in January because of FFP laws, and they are supposedly seeking at least £100 million to let go of their star player.
Mikel Arteta’s team looks to have given up on signing Toney and instead begun looking into less expensive alternatives, with Mayoral emerging as a top target.
The Sun reports that Arsenal has been keeping a close eye on Mayoral’s recent performances and, impressed by them, has made the decision to make an initial bid of about £22 million to capture the Spaniard.
Mayoral to Arsenal
However, the article goes on to say that Getafe turned down the offer because they wouldn’t allow their star player to depart for anything less than £39 million. Therefore, it will be interesting to watch if Arsenal makes a better offer when they return in the following days.
The Sun claims that Fulham is also considering a move for him, meaning that the North London team will have fierce competition from their city rivals to finalize any possible deal involving the forward.
In order to advance his career and play regular first-team football, Mayoral was moved on loan to many clubs after failing to secure consistent playing time at Real Madrid.
Since joining Getafe in the summer of 2022, the 26-year-old has been beginning to thrive in his career. This season, the attacker has had a successful year in La Liga, making 19 appearances while recording 12 goals and just one assist.
This season, in the Spanish top division, Mayoral has shown flashes of his potential. If he were to sign with the North Londoners, they would hope that the striker can duplicate that kind of play at the Emirates Stadium.
It will be intriguing to watch, though, if Arsenal decides to strengthen their striking unit by acquiring Mayoral during this winter transfer window.
