It has been suggested by Darren Bent that Pau Torres from Aston Villa has received little attention this year and is a serious candidate to win the Premier League’s signing of the year award.
Unai Emery’s Aston Villa have surprised everyone by becoming a significant contender in the title fight despite a difficult beginning, especially following a 5-1 loss to Newcastle on the first day of play. That day at St James’ Park, Pau Torres made his Aston Villa debut. Entering the game shortly after the half-hour mark, he replaced Tyrone Mings, who had sustained a catastrophic injury.
Pau Torres, 27, needed some time to get used to life in the Premier League, but he quickly established himself as a key member of Unai Emery’s team. Given their previous cooperation at Villarreal, this development is not shocking and has probably contributed to Torres’ development into a key member of the squad.
Cole Palmer’s strong showing for Chelsea was brought up by Darren Bent during a talkSPORT discussion regarding possible signings of the season. He gave Pau Torres credit for his performance and acknowledged the £31.5 million defender’s importance while talking about other contenders.
“Palmer has done some amazing work this season. However, notice that we overlooked James Maddison, van de Ven, and Vicario, the custodian, who were all excellent for Spurs.
“Szoboszlai was fantastic for Liverpool. He would be my [signing of the season], Kudus, West Ham.
“Someone who’s probably gone under the radar who people haven’t really spoken about, Pau Torres,” the former Premier League striker continued. He has, incidentally, been outstanding.
