Gennaro Gattuso, the head coach of Marseille, was fired after just 24 games in charge.
Since taking over at the Orange Velodrome at the end of September, Gennaro Gattuso the former manager of AC Milan, Valencia, and Napoli has only orchestrated nine victories in the previous five months. Marcelino was successful under his leadership.
Following Marcelino’s unexpected departure, Marseille dropped six positions to ninth place in the rankings with Les Olympiens in the Champions League spots following their 1-0 loss to Brest in Sunday’s Ligue 1 matchup.
Gattuso, whose contract with Marseille only extended until the summer, has been removed from his duties as expected. Marseille is now nine points outside of the top four and has a six-point deficit to close against Lens in the Europa Conference League.
“Olympique de Marseille announces the end of its collaboration with Gennaro Gattuso,” stated a brief statement from the Ligue 1 giants.
“Olympique de Marseille would like to extend its special thanks to Gennaro and his entire staff for the unfailing commitment and professionalism they have shown daily, and wishes them all the best for the future.”
The 70-year-old manager of Marseille is expected to lead the team for the remainder of the season. He was fired by the Elephants during the Africa Cup of Nations, and his first match as manager will probably be Thursday’s Europa League playoff second leg against Shakhtar Donetsk, with whom Les Olympiens drew 2-2 last week.
