In the sixth round of their Matchroom Boxing match at the Caribe Royale Orlando in Florida, Edgar Berlanga prevailed over the other man.
After starting his career with a run of 16 straight stoppage victories, the 26-year-old now has a 22-0 unblemished record, with 17 of those bouts ending inside the distance. This is the first knockout he has received since 2020.
After the fight, Berlanga wasted little time in announcing his intentions: he wants to go up against Canelo, who is currently looking for an opponent for his yearly Cinco de Mayo fight in May.
“I need him right now. We absolutely want Canelo to come next. Just take a look at Eddie Hearn; he’s going to pull it off. That’s necessary for boxing. As opposed to a Mexican star, they require a Puerto Rican star. The biggest fight of the year would be that one.
Eddie Hearn, the promoter for Berlanga, expressed his excitement for the upcoming bout, although he believes Berlanga may have one more fight before then.
It’s just a question of time. Puerto Rico versus Mexico—Edgar Berlanga versus Canelo Alvarez—will be a major event. I’ll tell you right now, if the call came, he wouldn’t back down. Perhaps there is still one more fight left (bout until Canelo).
Berlanga refused to attempt a 12-round runaround the ring. He would take Canelo Alvarez on in a bout. Fans would want to see him put on an incredible fight, and that’s what he would offer them.
It would be an exciting fight since he has a young opponent here who is strong and full of heart who will face him head-on.
On the card, Antonio Vargas and Shakhram Giyasov both triumphed, and amateur star Andy Cruz improved to 3-0 with a commanding unanimous decision victory over Brayan Zamarripa.
