According to boxing sources, Canelo Alvarez is considering leaving Al Haymon’s PBC and returning to Eddie Hearn’s Matchroom Boxing.
Canelo Alvarez inked a lucrative three-fight agreement with the PBC in 2023, and it was anticipated that he would make his ring comeback on Cinco de Mayo weekend in May.
The undisputed champion, however, is reportedly going to sign a new contract with Matchroom Boxing and DAZN, where he may face Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia, according to a report from ESPN Mexico correspondent Salvador Rodriguez.
“All signs point to the fact that Canelo won’t be fighting under the PBC banner or against Jermall Charlo, David Benavidez, Terence Crawford, or anybody else,” he tweeted.
“For the four-time world champion, Eddie Hearn’s fight schedule against Edgar Berlanga and Jaime Munguia has been activated instead.”
The Puerto Rican Berlanga continued his blazing track at 168 pounds with a decisive stoppage victory over Padraig McCrory over the weekend.
Before the remarkable performance in the US, his promoter Hearn had already mentioned the up-and-coming talent as a possible rival for Alvarez.
The PBC saw Munguia as the perfect opponent for Alvarez, but because of his connection to DAZN, Hearn is also expected to be in a position to extend an offer for the bout.
As per the initial plan of the PBC, Jermall Charlo was supposed to be the front-runner to get revenge on his twin brother Jermell for losing on the customary May bout date with Alvarez.
Although it now seems doubtful, boxing fans have also expressed their wish to witness an enormous bout with undefeated challenger David Benavidez.
Sampson Lewkowicz, the promoter of Benavidez, claimed on social media in a later deleted tweet that Alvarez had received a guaranteed $55 million purse offer in exchange for the fight with Benavidez.
Eddy Reynoso, the boxing legend’s manager and trainer, refuted this, stating that no official communication had been established.
“The truth is that none of the big promoters—Eddie Hearn from Matchroom, Bob Arum from Top Rank, Oscar De La Hoya from Golden Boy, or even Al Haymon from Premier Boxing Champions—have offered me a fight against Benavidez, and not Terence Crawford,” Reynoso stated to ESPN Mexico.
“There are a lot of variables that could lead to the fight with Benavidez happening sooner rather than later.”
Possibly the most advantageous choice with Al Haymon’s PBC was a major bout against pound-for-pound competitor Terence Crawford.
When it was announced that Crawford’s much-anticipated rematch with Errol Spence was no longer on the cards, fans were eager for a big fight.
However, it looks like a thrilling battle between the two undefeated champions is unlikely to happen, with matches against Berlanga and Munguia currently being considered more plausible.
Reynoso claims that an announcement about Alvarez’s next professional step and opponent is anticipated this week.
It appears that the 33-year-old’s future will soon be settled.
