Journalist Tobi Altshäffl of Bild claims that following months of uncertainty and conjecture, Thomas Tuchel has at last emerged as the front-runner to keep his head coaching post at Bayern Munich.
After making a stunning U-turn and considering no less than five other options, including Xabi Alonso and Roberto De Zerbi, Bayern Munich management has now formally started talks with Tuchel to keep him on board.
Important players like Thomas Muller and Manuel Neuer were reportedly pushing for Tuchel to stay. After hearing what was said, the Board is currently debating extending the contract.
But Tuchel wants to extend his contract into 2025 to prevent a recurrence of the events of the last few weeks and to avoid being a band-aid fix.
After taking over at the end of the previous campaign, Tuchel led Bayern to a thrilling victory over Koln on the final day of play, securing the Bundesliga title.
This season, an undefeated Bayer Leverkusen team in the Bundesliga has outperformed Bayern Munich, who were eliminated in the Champions League semi-finals.
Tuchel wants more authority over transfer policy to prevent another season without a trophy. In any other case, he still finds the idea of playing in the Premier League to be appealing.
If Tuchel stays, the Bayern Munich administration will need to make a long-term commitment.
