Julian Alvarez stated he wants to consider his future at Manchester City because he feels he isn’t playing enough important games. Pep Guardiola had a straightforward message for him.
Alvarez did not start for City in the starting lineup following the injured returns of Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, but no player played more for the team in the previous campaign. He made headlines when he said he would “start thinking about what I want for myself” after his international service was over. He has been playing for Argentina this summer, first at the Copa America and then at the Olympics.
“I was among the guys on the team who played the most minutes the previous season. However, you indeed want to participate in big games since you don’t like to be left out.”
The Argentine, who this summer added the Copa America to his impressive trophy collection, is wanted by Atletico Madrid, but they have not made an offer, and City would want a high price for a player whose contract expires in 2028.
Knowing full well what the remarks meant, Guardiola responded sharply when asked if City would look to replace the attacker.
He promised to give it some thought. His agent is going to call Txiki after he’s finished thinking about it, and then we’ll see what transpires,” the manager stated.
“Yes, I am aware that he wants to play significant events. However, the others also do. Many who are 18 or 19 also desire to play in the major games. I’ve read that he wishes to consider it. Alright, give it some thought. He will then let us know what he wants to do.
“He wants more, he plays a lot? That’s alright. That being said, consider this. He’ll let us know when he gives it some thought.”
Guardiola provided an update on Kevin De Bruyne’s status, stating that the Belgian is “not leaving” despite the Saudi Pro League’s interest in him last week.
Although the manager acknowledged that De Bruyne might yet go, he has the right to decide how his time at City is spent. He also restated his expectation that his lucky charm will be with the team come football season.
“The club informs me that they didn’t get an offer,” he clarified. An offer is necessary to go. I hope he stays, but I’m not sure what will happen.
