For Manchester United this season, Marcus Rashford may have more to give after showing off some of his skills over the last few days.
Against Southampton, the forward curled in a spectacular goal to snap his goal drought over the weekend. In the Red Devils’ 7-0 Carabao Cup victory over Barnsley on Tuesday night, he continued to build on that performance by scoring twice and providing an assist.
Moreover eighteen months after his initial performances were criticised, Rashford now seems prepared to make amends. Express Sport examines how Manchester United can assist its academy graduate in advancing and regaining the form that made him a standout forward in the Premier League.
Combine the players with the best form.
Erik ten Hag needs to keep believing in a similar attack even though Barnsley presented a formidable foe for United’s front line.
The Red Devils had plenty of pace in the last part of their match against Barnsley and were able to go forward in a couple of passes thanks to Alejandro Garnacho back on the left, Antony on the right, and Rashford through the middle.
In addition, United had three outlets, which allowed them to play the ball in behind Barnsley’s defence when needed—something they haven’t done well this season.
Since he’s had a great start to the season, Amad Diallo, Rashford, and Garnacho might form a deadly offensive line, with Antony sitting this one out. The three can be used on either flank, and their versatility might pose serious problems for the Premier League.
Eliminating the usual No. 9s Joshua Zirkzee has shown potential since joining from Bologna, while Rammus Hojlund was excellent last season, but both players may have to settle for the bench for the time being at Old Trafford.
Against Barnsley, Rashford was most effective when he played through the middle. His combination play with Antony and Garnacho also allowed him to stray outside when needed to create central openings, which Christian Eriksen loved.
Given that Bruno Fernandes is probably coming back against Crystal Palace, Ten Hag would benefit tactically by using Rashford as a striker, who could also bring out the best in his captain.
Kept the faith after Ten Hag
Ten Hag expressed his trust in Rashford before United’s victory over Southampton, and the Dutchman has so far been proven correct. Rashford will flourish once he gets his first goal under his belt.
Hence, even if goal droughts reappear, the former Ajax manager needs to stick behind the forward both in public and in private. Rashford has proven to be a confident player, and his struggles in front of goal would only worsen if his manager didn’t back him.
