Sabalenka Shocks the World: Wins Australian Open Women’s Singles
We have a new winner of the Australian Open women’s singles, ladies and gentlemen. In three sets, Aryna Sabalenka overcame Elena Rybakina on Saturday in Melbourne to win the competition.
Rybakina won the opening set 6-4, placing Sabalenka in a precarious position she hadn’t encountered before in the run-up to the championship match. The second set was won by Sabalenka with a commanding score of 6-3, but Rybakina returned the favor by winning the third set 6-4 to win the final match.
Sabalenka won her first-ever Grand Slam title in the championship match, which was the only one of her seven matches at the Open in which she lost a set.
The 24-year-old champion from Belarus had to sit down, cry a little, and take it all in. What a sensation.
