Seven players will leave Manchester United when their contracts expire, according to the retained list the club has posted ahead of the 2023–24 season.
The two most notable players departing United this summer are Phil Jones and Axel Tuanzebe, but a number of junior team players have also been let go.
According to United, “discussions remain open” with David De Gea regarding a potential new contract.
The news that Jones’ contract will not be extended and that he would be free to depart the team after 12 years was made public last month.
Due to a knee issue, the 31-year-old has started just two games in the past three years. He did not practice at all during the previous season and was last seen on May 20 during a session at Carrington. Since signing a new deal in February 2019, he has started 16 games and been replaced five times at halftime.
Since the 2021 Europa League final, Tuanzebe hasn’t appeared on the pitch for United. A second injury-plagued year for the 25-year-old in 2022 resulted in just five appearances during his four-month loan with Stoke City in the Championship.
Ethan Galbraith, a midfielder for Northern Ireland, has also departed the team. The 22-year-old spent the previous season on loan with Salford of League Two, and the Championship is already being mentioned in connection with his future.
In November 2019’s Europa League group stage match against Astana, Galbraith made his sole senior United debut. He is presently deployed overseas with the senior Northern Ireland team.
Di’Shon Bernard will be free to sign a permanent contract with a new club this summer thanks to United’s decision to release him rather than activate his clause.
Eric Hanbury, an academy goalkeeper, Manni Norkett, a forward, and Charlie Wellens, a midfielder, are all leaving the club but will be assisted by the aftercare programme while they look for new clubs.
Ethan Laird’s contract has been extended by United by one year, although following another unsuccessful loan with Queens Park Rangers, he may potentially be traded this summer.
Rhys Bennett, the FA Youth Cup champion captain, had his contract extended, and Mateo Mejia, an academy forward, was given a fresh offer. After talks about a new contract, Under-21s player-coach Tom Huddlestone is anticipated to stay with the organization.
Additionally, the club has chosen to add another year to the contracts of Nathan Bishop and Tom Heaton.
Although Mason Greenwood is identified as a United player, the results of their internal investigation cannot be inferred from this.
