Details of Mason Mount’s eye-watering deal are coming to light, and Manchester United run the risk of alienating some of its finest players. As he gets about to sign a long-term contract at Old Trafford, the departing Chelsea midfielder will reportedly earn more money than veteran talents Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes.
This Thursday, Chelsea and United were able to reach a deal on the price for Mount, with the Blues receiving a guaranteed £55 million. If the 24-year-old continues to have success with the Red Devils, an additional £5 million in add-ons will increase the whole sum.
While Chelsea are sure to be pleased with such a hefty fee for a player who would have been a free agent in one year’s time, United may also afford themselves a pat on the back for negotiating a discount on the original £70m asking price.
When it comes to Mount’s pay packet, however, United were not able to scrimp. According to The Telegraph, the England international is set to bank a basic £250,000 a week at Old Trafford.
Furthermore, bonuses could take Mount’s weekly wage up to £300,000 a week, which would put him among the squad’s very highest earners. According to Sportrac, even the Chelsea academy graduate’s basic pay will put him above Rashford and Fernandes.
Given the important role they played under Erik ten Hag last season, that might not sit well with the players’ camps. Rashford achieved a new career-high haul with 30 goals, making him by far United’s leading scorer in all competitions.
The speedy forward joined the Red Devils in 2015–16 after graduating from the club’s academy, and he has remained a one-club man ever since. Rashford is said to get £200,000 a week despite scoring 123 goals in 359 games for United, however that sum will increase once he signs a new contract.
Mount would fall below Jadon Sancho, Casemiro, Raphael Varane, and Anthony Martial in the standings due to his eye-watering wage agreements.
The Red Devils’ highest-paid player, David de Gea, presently has a contract that will expire at midnight on Friday. Even if the Spaniard does decide to stay, it will be on dramatically reduced terms as United searches for other custodian possibilities, notably Andre Onana of Inter Milan.
