Not mentioning David De Gea’s name in that phrase seems odd. For more than ten years, the Spanish shot-stopper has held the top spot for the Red Devils.
De Gea, who joined from Atletico Madrid back in 2011, is the final player that renowned previous boss Sir Alex Ferguson signed before Phil Jones departed the club.
It’s unclear whether the seasoned goalie still has a role to play in Manchester United’s future, albeit the 32-year-old’s contract expired at the end of last month and no agreement has yet been made with the team.
While De Gea’s future is still up in the air, reports claim that United have been keeping an eye on Inter Milan’s Andre Onana. Speaking exclusively on Monday’s DeBrief podcast, top transfer expert and CaughtOffside columnist Fabrizio Romano revealed what the Red Devils have planned for their out-of-contract goalkeeper’s future as well as who might replace the veteran: “He [De Gea] will have a conversation with Manchester United; it will happen this week.
Because there has been a concrete dialogue but no formal offer for Andre Onana, I’m confident Manchester United will also speak with Inter Milan again.
“They have more choices for a new goalkeeper; they are not limited to De Gea or Onana. Another choice is to recruit a new goalkeeper while keeping De Gea in order to add additional goalkeeping competition. However, everything will depend on the dialogues that take place this week.
De Gea, who has played 45 times for Spain, has spent 12 years at Old Trafford and has recorded 190 clean sheets in 545 games in all competitions.
