On Wednesday, Mount was formally introduced by United. He signed a five-year contract with an additional 12-month option, and a deal with Chelsea for £55 million plus $5 million in add-ons was reached.
The England international will wear the number 7 jersey, which was last worn by club legends George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, and David Beckham. Cristiano Ronaldo relinquished it last season.
Mount however will wear no7 next season after it was offered to him by Erik ten Hag early on in talks with the player.
The Manchester Evening News reports ten Hag’s decision sent a clear indication to Mount how much United value the midfielder and signaled the pivotal role he will have in the starting XI next season.
Garnacho meanwhile liked an Instagram post from United confirming Mount as their new no7 shortly after the official announcement.
Mount is United’s first summer signing with ten Hag making his arrival a top priority, having admired him since his stint in Netherlands on loan at Vitesse Arnhem.
It’s never easy to leave the team where you were raised, but Mount said joining Manchester United will be an exciting new challenge for the next stage of his career.
I’ve played against them, so I know how powerful a team I’m joining is, and I’m excited to support this group’s pursuit of major trophies.
Everyone can see the progress the club has achieved under Erik ten Hag.
“After meeting with the manager and hearing about his objectives, I couldn’t be more eager for the upcoming seasons and am prepared for the arduous effort that will be required here.
“I have enormous ambition; I know what it takes to succeed and how amazing it is to win significant trophies.” I will do anything to have that experience at Manchester United once more.
