Donny van de Beek’s comeback goal helped United defeat Laurent Blanc’s Lyon at the second stop of their preseason tour.
Following his £60 million transfer from Chelsea, Mason Mount received his second experience playing for the first team United. Andre Onana, who will shortly take over as United’s starting custodian, wasn’t involved since his transfer from Inter hadn’t been finalized.
But Murrayfield is hosting several fresh talents as well as a few returning stars. This is how they fared.
Man Utd player ratings
Matej Kovar – 5
When Kovar took over for Tom Heaton in the United side, he appeared calm on the ball despite having little to do in terms of shot-stopping. The young player did experience one awkward situation, however, when a sloppy pass put Raphel Varane under pressure.
One player only—Kovar—was granted the full 90 minutes.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka – 5
Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who is usually praised for his defensive skills, had a lot of possession against Lyon and looked steady but unspectacular.
Raphael Varane – 6
As solid as ever and did well to clear a dangerous free-kick late in the half.
Lisandro Martinez – 8
Was at his typical level. Early on, the center-back made a strong challenge to thwart a Lyon counterattack, and later, he went on a rampage to open up an opportunity for United. Naturally, his death was also good.
Alvaro Fernandez – 5
Midfield turnover cost Lyon a great opportunity and might have resulted in a penalty late in the half. very well throughout the whole of the match against Jeffinho.
Hannibal Mejbri – 6
As usual, he was very energetic, but as the first half went on, his impact on the game diminished. In the final five minutes of the first 45, he was fortunate to avoid a card with a hasty challenge.
Kobbie Mainoo – 7
Mainoo appears to be a genuine player. He seemed dependable both in possession and out of it. He was cool under pressure. The young player showed outstanding passing range in addition to making a brilliant block to thwart a good Lyon opportunity.
Mason Mount – 5
Mount improved as the half went on, but he failed to make an impact on either of his two half-chances. The England international missed a chance from a free kick that was hammered into the Lyon wall and then skied an effort from the edge of the box moments later.
Antony – 6
Three minutes into the game, the Brazilian squandered an opportunity to score from close range. Like the entire United front line, his impact waned as the first half went on.
Amad Diallo – 6
Early on, Diallo had a superb opportunity, but he pulled his shot wide of the far post when one on one with the custodian. Later, he fired again, but the custodian parried it away.
But despite rarely being engaged for the remainder of the game, he peaked too early.
Jadon Sancho – 6
was deeply invested and displayed some good qualities all through. He did very well, in the beginning, to position Antony for a chance with a guilt edge.
He was, however, occasionally wasteful in crucial attacking circumstances.
Substitutes:
Jonny Evans – 6
Had to do very little on his return to the United line-up. On one occasion he was able to show his experience with a solid, no-nonsense challenge to halt a counterattack
A very quiet half for a player that may be returning to Edinburgh to join Hibernian on loan this summer.
Marc Jurado – 5
Had a steady second half, starting energetically down the flank. However, he faded.
Brandon Williams – 5
At 22, Brandon Williams was one of the senior heads in a youthful United line-up. Had next to nothing to do.
Fred – 6
His general play was good and he even provided Isak Hansen-Aaroen with a great opportunity from a good ‘nutmegged’ pass.
Fred was also on most of the set pieces, few of which caused much of a problem for Lyon.
Daniel Gore – 8
Daniel Gore did brilliantly to generate a cross on the stretch for Van de Beek’s goal. And he generally looked good – all action, all energy, and good in possession. Ten Hag would have liked what he saw.
Isak Hansen-Aaroen – 6
Had a good chance on the counter, but his low shot was tipped away from the far corner. Just as he proved against Leeds, Hansen-Aaroen looks like a very technically proficient player.
Omari Forson – 6
Looked tricky on the ball and one occasion thundered into a heavy challenge to dispossess a Lyon player. However, he faded as the half went on.
Donny van de Beek – 7
showed strong energy overall, however, he might not have been nearly as polished as he would have been with more game time.
Joe Hugill – 6
He began the half by galloping up the pitch on a one-man solo mission, and he did a fantastic job running the channels and pressing the defense in general. It appears to be impossible to play against.
