The Cityzens have grudgingly agreed to sell Algerian forward Mahrez to Al Ahli for about £30 million; Mahrez has agreed to a £45 million annual wage with the Saudi Pro League team. Mahrez is expected in Saudi Arabia in the upcoming days to complete his move.
City are now seeking at options to strengthen their midfield now that Mahrez has left and Bernardo Silva might follow due to interest from both PSG and Barcelona.
Sources have told 90min that Barcola is one of the players they prefer, and the club has already scouted the France Under-21 international this year. Rayan Cherki, Barcola’s teammate from Lyon, and Gabri Veiga, a rising star from Celta Vigo, are also on their radar, according to 90min.
After making his senior debut for Lyon in January 2023, Barcola quickly established himself as a prominent member of the team, tallying five goals and eight assists in 25 Ligue 1 matches. Despite Barcola’s inexperience, it’s been reported to 90min that City’s scouts are extremely impressed with the young player.
However, RB Leipzig and Paris Saint-Germain have also inquired about Barcola’s potential availability this summer, adding to City’s list of admirers for the 20-year-old. In fact, PSG is working hard to reach a deal and has already spoken with Jorge Mendes, his agent.
“I hope the coach will continue to have faith in me. I have no idea how the transfer window will play out, but I don’t see any reason for me to leave. I need to have a successful entire season in which I start every game.
Laurent Blanc, the head coach of Lyon, also voiced his opinion, stating that Barcola and Cherki, who have both been extensively connected to Chelsea, should not be departing this summer.
Cherki didn’t play in many games as a starter until the second half of the season, he admitted, admitting that he was becoming a touch self-centered. Being requested by a major club, like Barcola, is one thing; succeeding is quite another. I suggest they continue in Lyon for one additional year.
