According to a recent article from The Daily Mail, Manchester United may have plans for suspended forward Mason Greenwood for the upcoming campaign.
Greenwood was detained on suspicion of attempted rape, coercive behaviour, and violence back in January of last year after allegations led to his suspension from all club obligations.
Greater Manchester Police dismissed all charges, but the club swiftly opened its own inquiry into Greenwood’s behaviour.
Following the conclusion of their 2022–23 season, United’s internal inquiries have been intensified, although no imminent resolution is in sight.
United is rumoured to be considering loaning out the 21-year-old for the 2023–2024 season while the probe proceeds.
This would enable United to “gauge public reaction, as well as Greenwood’s mental health and performance levels,” according to The Mail.
The athlete will gain from playing time regardless of where he is loaned out because he hasn’t played in any significant capacity for more than 18 months.
Which clubs are eligible to borrow Greenwood?
Since their academy graduate is unlikely to be loaned to another Premier League team, a stint abroad is the most likely scenario.
Although a firm choice has not yet been made, Greenwood is apparently considering offers from temporary destinations in Italian, Spanish, and Turkish clubs.
According to a story from The Sun published last month, Juventus was prepared to give the United outcast a fresh start and had spoken with Greenwood’s team.
The Old Lady reportedly believed that having Paul Pogba, Greenwood’s former teammate, on their books would make them a desirable choice.
The 21-year-old, who was born in Bradford, was also being courted by Italian powerhouses Roma and AC Milan, according to their report.
Will Mason Greenwood ever once again represent Manchester United?
There are still two years left on Greenwood’s £75,000 per week deal, but it’s quite unlikely that he would play for his old team once more.
Greenwood ‘had extensive negotiations with United officials’ at the tail end of March, according to a previous Daily Mail article The Daily Mail.
Greenwood begged for a return, but the club vowed they would move quickly with their inquiries into his behaviour.
Even if their inquiry is still underway, United may choose to sever all relations with Greenwood if they determine that he has damaged their reputation.
As an alternative, a loan to a foreign country can give the club the chance to pause when the procedure is over.
