Brighton and Liverpool have spoken about the transfer of midfielder Moises Caicedo.
This afternoon, sensational rumors about the Reds’ massive offer for Caicedo have been making the rounds. It appears that Chelsea’s intrusion into their pursuit of Romeo Lavia may have been caused by some positive news for Liverpool.
James Pearce, a journalist, has, however, used Twitter to play down rumors of a deal being made. Nevertheless, he affirms that the Reds have spoken to Brighton about the 21-year-old.
Pearce notes that LFC has a contract with Brighton for Caicedo but has not yet made an offer.
Still encouraging news, but perhaps we should temporarily rein in our enthusiasm.
Liverpool has not yet made a Caicedo bid.
Who could have anticipated this, I wonder? Sincerity be told, there might have been a few people who did. Liverpool’s hesitation in finalizing the Lavia deal may have hinted at other plans they may have had.
However, it also felt like a non-starter given Brighton’s outrageous asking price for Caicedo.
With so much to do this summer, it didn’t feel like the right moment for that, despite the Reds’ history of being willing to spend heavily when the right player presents themselves.
But, here we are. And there can be no low-balling here. Chelsea’s latest bid was reported to be something close to £80m [The Telegraph], and that was rejected.
They are aware that more will be required in order to negotiate with Brighton at the table. Such a move would easily make Caicedo Liverpool’s most expensive signing.
There is no time to waste as the season draws near. Brighton is not going to be a pushover during discussions, and they might even be looking to make up for the money they lost by giving Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool earlier this summer.
The Reds should have maintained a friendly tone in any discussions regarding Mac Allister. There’s no doubt that it could help them. Liverpool, put in your bid and tie this up!
