Cole Palmer, a Manchester City forward who scored the game-winning goal in the European Super Cup victory over Sevilla, was advised by Kyle Walker to take cues from his teammates and boss.
Youssef En-Nesyri scored for City in the first half, and the 21-year-old equalized for them in the 63rd minute by heading in a beautiful Rodri cross. After a 1-1 draw after 90 minutes in Greece necessitated a penalty shootout, City scored all five times, and Nemanja Gudelj’s botched attempt made sure the Champions League champions once more took home the hardware.
Palmer, a member of City, can be especially happy after an outstanding second half in the Super Cup. The academy graduate had trouble getting consistent playing time the previous season but was given a crucial start against Sevilla in a European final. Palmer has scored twice in as few as three games this season after scoring City’s 87th goal in the Community Shield two weeks ago.
Palmer may see greater playing time this season as a result of De Bruyne’s injury and Mahrez’s departure in the summer, and Walker urged his young teammate to take advantage of the situation.
When asked about Palmer after the game, the defender said on TNT Sports, “This guy is phenomenal.” He is surrounded by good teammates and is likely the best manager in the entire globe.
“All he has to do is keep moving, keep his feet on the ground, which he does, and keep scoring goals; he has one in the Community Shield and one in the Super Cup. He’ll be alright if he keeps getting better and pays attention to me standing behind him.
When asked about the game, Walker responded, “I thought the players put in a terrific performance. It was always going to be a tough game at the start of the season. Although we accomplished the task at hand and that was our intended goal, I do believe we should have been more methodical in our approach.
“We rode our luck a little bit, but we made it. The most important thing was to travel here despite the challenging circumstances — everyone is sweating and it was extremely hot — but it’s fantastic to leave with the trophy we worked so hard for last season, to win the Champions League, and now to finally win this and display it in Manchester.
