There are many comings and goings that Manchester United must accomplish in the last week of the summer transfer window.
Rasmus Hojlund joined United from Atalanta earlier this month to become the club’s third acquisition of the summer transfer window. Early in the summer, the team moved to capture Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana before completing the signing of attack-minded midfielder Mason Mount.
This squad still has certain weaknesses, and it needs more depth in a number of areas. The roster is still overstuffed with unneeded players who don’t fit into Erik ten Hag’s ideas and who will likely try to be moved on this week.
Altay Bayinder, a goalkeeper from Fenerbahce in Turkey, has passed a physical and is ready to sign with United, but a few other things need to happen first. Fener and United have already tentatively agreed to sell for a low price, but Dean Henderson must leave first.
Vicente Guaita has lost favor at Selhurst Park, and Henderson is now on Crystal Palace’s radar. Sam Johnstone has served as Roy Hodgson’s team’s starting goalkeeper so far this season, but his mistake in giving up a penalty against Arsenal on Monday has accelerated the club’s quest for a replacement.
With Jonny Evans expected to receive a one-year deal from United, the future of Harry Maguire in defense is further questioned. The England international defender, who lost his position as club captain this summer, was sold by the Red Devils to West Ham in a £30 million deal. That fell through when a pay package couldn’t be agreed upon, but United are still open to a late transfer window move should a good offer come in.
The former United youth product from Northern Ireland, who Louis van Gaal sold to another club eight years prior, impressed manager Erik ten Hag during preseason training before agreeing to a temporary contract at Old Trafford to last until the summer.
This week will also see the transfer of Eric Bailly, who United are reportedly eager to offload for a pittance. Along with Saudi Arabian clubs, Fulham has expressed interest in the player who spent the previous season on loan at Marseille.
After selling Fred to Fenerbahce, Ten Hag is still prioritizing the hiring of a second midfielder to give his squad more depth. This week, Fiorentina made it clear that they would consider any bids for United’s preferred combative midfielder Sofyan Amrabat.
Ten Hag previously coached the player at FC Utrecht and the is believed to be desperate to leave the Italian club this month. That he was an unused substitute this weekend in Fiorentina’s opening day Serie A victory at Genoa speaks to the likelihood of an exit.
The United boss is happy for Scott McTominay to be sold in such an event – although West Ham’s £30million approach for the Scotland international was knocked back earlier this month with the Red Devils valuing the midfielder at closer to £45m.
Donny van de Beek is still on United’s radar for a transfer, despite Real Sociedad having expressed interest in signing him earlier this summer. This season, Ten Hag has no ambitions for the Dutch midfielder to play for the first squad.
Mason Greenwood would be departing the club after an internal inquiry, United announced on Monday. It is still unknown if the club will demand payment for the former England international. Shola Shoretire and Teden Mengi’s loan departures will be handled in the meantime.
