Phil Foden expressed his surprise at Rico Lewis’s skill in the first squad and that of his fellow Manchester City player.
The two recently played together in City’s Champions League final group stage encounter, which ended in a 3-2 victory over Red Star Belgrade.
The 23-year-old has since offered his opinions about the other academy graduate and what makes him so skilled on the pitch, though.
Foden gushes about Lewis.
Foden discussed Lewis in an interview that was included on the most recent episode of the Official Man City Podcast.
“What’s his age, 19?” he asked? Yes, that is quite bizarre. He seems to be far more aware than I was when I was that age. like his intelligence and awareness of his surroundings. You know, finding it in a 19-year-old isn’t typical.
It usually develops gradually. The fact that the manager starts him in midfield during these crucial games just goes to demonstrate how smart he is on the pitch.
The 19-year-old has made 37 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s team since making his senior debut for the Citizens in August 2022 during the team’s 4-0 victory over Bournemouth. During that time, he has contributed one goal and three assists.
The fact that Lewis signed a five-year contract in August to remain at Etihad Stadium until 2028 demonstrates how highly the team regards him and views him as a long-term player.
The Englishman, who has played in a number of different defensive and midfield positions, has appeared in 14 games for the Manchester United this season across all competitions. He has started nine of those games against teams like Arsenal, Aston Villa, and RB Leipzig.
Guardiola stated in October that Lewis possesses the mental capacity to play in a midfield position, so Foden is not the first City employee to commend the adolescent’s intelligence.
With all of things considered, it’s reasonable to conclude that Manchester United has a highly skilled player in their midst who has undoubtedly improved in the first team under Guardiola.
