Barcelona is currently negotiating the choppy waters of financial instability as a result of years of poor management that have produced a wide range of economic difficulties.
The club’s recent challenges to comply with financial fair play regulations and lack of independence in the transfer market clearly illustrate these complications.
But as Barcelona continues to rebuild its finances under Joan Laporta, winning the forthcoming Spanish Super Cup might increase their income.
Not only is the competition seen as a fantastic way to boost morale among the players and restore faith in head coach Xavi Hernandez, but the Catalan giants may also use the tournament’s prize structure to help with their financial recovery.
Barcelona is ready for a cash boost
Indeed, the Spanish Federation has agreed to pay Barça €6 million net simply for their participation in the Spanish Super Cup, according to SPORT.
Barcelona will also get €1.5 million if they win the competition and advance all the way.
The victors will take home €1 million, while the teams that are ousted in the semi-finals will each earn €750,000.
The agreement that Saudi Arabia and the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), then led by Luis Rubiales, made in 2019 to send the Spanish Super Cup to the Middle East for six years in exchange for €240 million, or €40 million per season, is the source of this funding.
The Spanish Federation, the participating clubs, and the middleman business Kosmos—owned by former Barcelona star Gerard Pique—divide the funds.
Who will Barcelona play?
On January 11th, Barcelona will play Osasuna in the semi-finals of the tournament at the Al-Awwal Stadium.
Should they triumph, they will face off either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup championship match.
