Nick Kyrgios will return to the world of tennis broadcasting when he competes in the Australian Open of 2024 with the elite squad of Eurosport.
Following Rafael Nadal’s withdrawal from the Australian Open, the Australian player also tweeted his sympathies, drawing a parallel to his own injury circumstances.
Kyrgios will join the sports network Eurosport’s staff of analysts and pundits for the 2018 Australian Open, which takes place from January 14 to January 28.
Boris Becker, John McEnroe, Mats Wilander, Justine Henin, Alex Corretja, Barbara Schett, Tim Henman, and Laura Robson are among the notable group of former tennis players that the 28-year-old joins.
The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up has not yet announced his return date and will not be competing in the Melbourne Grand Slam while he continues his injury rehabilitation.
After a stellar 2022 season, Kyrgios was injured last year and missed his lone competitive game of the year, which was in Stuttgart in June.
After undergoing knee surgery in January 2023, the former world No. 13 has seen more setbacks, including a wrist ailment that ruined his plans to make a comeback for the grass-court season.
“We first delivered the Australian Open under the Eurosport brand in 1995, and this year’s tournament promises to be one of the best yet, packed with so many inspirational stories and battles that fans can follow every step of the way across our channels and platforms,” stated Scott Young, Group SVP, Content, Production and Business Operations, WBD (Warnes Bros. Discovery) Sports Europe.
“We offer a 360-degree tennis ecosystem that no other broadcaster can match, connecting tennis enthusiasts to the game they love.”
“With one of the most amazing expert lineups of tennis icons and celebrities, we hope to elevate the storyline beyond anything seen before.
“We’re especially happy to have Nick Kyrgios join our English-language commentary team this year. We know fans will gain from his distinct viewpoints and proximity to the current generation of competitors and champions competing on the court this year.”
Kyrgios has experience commentating and punditry on tennis after making an appearance on Tennis Channel during the November 2023 ATP Finals.
In addition, Kyrgios sent a supportive message to 22-time major winner Rafael Nadal, who will be sidelined by injury at the Australian Open.
You got it, Rafa guy 😢💔 get healthy quickly; returning a bit too soon was something I was also afraid of,” the Australian said on Twitter / X.
After nearly a year off the court, Rafael Nadal returned to action at last week’s Brisbane International, but he will not play in Melbourne as scheduled owing to a setback.
Nadal had not played since losing to Mackenzie McDonald in the 2023 Australian Open second round because of a hip ailment. That was prior to Brisbane. In June of last year, the former world No. 1 had arthroscopic surgery to address the psoas muscle in his hip.
As you know, I was concerned about a minor muscular issue I experienced during my most recent game in Brisbane,” the 37-year-old said.
“I had the opportunity to get an MRI once I arrived in Melbourne, and the good news is that I have a microtear on a muscle that is not in the same area where I was injured.
“At this time, I am not prepared to compete in five-set matches at the highest level of exigence.” I’m taking a plane back to Spain to visit my physician, receive some care, and relax.
“Although I am disappointed to not be able to perform for the incredible Melbourne audiences, this is not terrible news, and we are all optimistic about the direction the season is taking.”
