Being one of Barcelona’s most paid players, Frenkie de Jong has been the focus of multiple media stories suggesting the club may try to sell him this summer in order to raise money, while other sources imply De Jong is unhappy and wants to go.
De Jong, however, claimed everything being printed was false and that he intended to stay with Barcelona for many years when he sat down in front of the media earlier this week. He also revealed he was “pissed off” with all the claims.
SPORT reports that Deco, the sports director of Barcelona, had a recent meeting with Ali Dursun, the agent of De Jong, in an attempt to quell the rumours.
Deco took action to make sure De Jong’s team didn’t think the club was spreading any suspicions, and the meeting is said to have concluded amicably.
Meetings between Deco and Dursun are frequent occurrences, and they frequently discuss De Jong’s contract.
Barcelona is eager to sign De Jong to an extension when his current contract ends in 2026, but as part of their continuous efforts to reduce payroll, they require the Dutchman to accept a lower income.
Although it’s unclear how the 26-year-old feels about taking a pay cut, De Jong has made it plain that he wants to stay with Barcelona, saying he wants to be a part of the team “for many years”.
Longtime admirers Manchester United and Chelsea are among the Premier League teams rumoured to be interested in De Jong.
