Alphonso Davies would be the latest high-profile signing for the Spanish club
Alphonso Davies, a player from Canada, is planning to join Real Madrid in 2025 or this year, ending the interest of other teams, including Bayern Munich, in his talents.
Following a series of discussions, including an in-person meeting in Madrid, between his camp and Real Madrid’s top scout Juni Calafat and director general Jose Angel Sanchez, Davies’ team has reportedly struck a verbal agreement with the Spanish club, according to The Athletic. Real Madrid had pushed Davies not to extend his contract with Bayern Munich from the start of their talks, and it looks like the left-back will choose not to.
Real Madrid will either attempt to sign Davies this summer for a transfer fee that is less than the going rate or wait until 2025 for his contract to expire to sign him for free. However, they haven’t started talks with Bayern yet.
If the deal closes, the La Liga leaders will sign Davies ahead of English clubs and rivals Barcelona. Bayern also wanted to sign Davies to a long-term contract, but if they are unable to retain the 23-year-old, they would rather obtain a transfer fee.
If Davies decides to join Real Madrid in the upcoming year, he won’t be the only well-known player to make the switch. Although signing Davies is not anticipated to impede the club’s pursuit of Kylian Mbappe as a free agent this summer, the latter trade is drawing nearer.
The Canadian’s presence would further enhance the sensation of a super team that Los Blancos appear to be pursuing. Real Madrid has star talent in several parts of the field, most notably in midfield with Jude Bellingham, who has 20 goals in 29 games so far in his rookie season. Mbappe would be the center of an assault that also includes Vinicius Junior. Davies, an attack-minded left-back with three assists, one goal, and 27 chances created in 18 games in the Bundesliga this season, would only increase the offensive production.
Ferland Mendy, Carlo Ancelotti’s top pick right now, and Davies would fight for a left-back berth. Being five years younger than Mendy, the Canadian would not only be a younger option, but he would also be a more active member of the attack than the Frenchman, who trails Davies in a few categories. Mendy is well behind Davies in touches and pass attempts this season in La Liga, where he has neither goals nor assists in 16 games while also creating just six chances.
