After scoring in Wednesday’s match between Man City and Arsenal, Erling Haaland surpassed the Premier League record for goals scored in a 38-game season.
The Norwegian has been chasing Mohamed Salah of Liverpool’s goalscoring record while being in phenomenal form during his debut season in England.
Prior to the signing of Haaland, the Egyptian forward possessed the record, having scored 32 goals during the Reds’ Premier League season in 2017–18.
After tying Salah’s total during Man City’s 3-1 victory over Leicester earlier this month, the former Borussia Dortmund striker passed him with his goal against the Arsenal.
Andrew Cole and Alan Shearer both scored 34 goals in 1993–94 and 1994–95, respectively, meaning he is still not the league’s all-time leading scorer in a single season.
But thanks to the addition of 22 top-flight clubs, the Premier League season was extended by four games, allowing for these accomplishments.
In terms of the number of games in which they can break the goalscoring record, Cole and Shearer unfairly hold an advantage over Haaland.
However, given that City still has six more Premier League games, the Norwegian is still on pace to surpass both of them.
The 22-year-old has been extremely productive for Pep Guardiola’s team, scoring 48 goals in all competitions so far this season.
Along with his amazing total in the Premier League, the Norwegian also has 12 goals in 8 appearances in the Champions League, 3 goals in 3 FA Cup games, and 1 goal in 2 Carabao Cup games.
He managed to score five goals earlier in City’s Champions League campaign against RB Leipzig, which was perhaps his most remarkable performance. City defeated RB Leipzig 7-0.
After Lionel Messi, he became the second player ever to win the award in the competition’s history.
The summer transfer window saw the Norwegian forward go from Dortmund to Manchester City for $51 million.
He made an immediate impact and scored twice on his Premier League debut as City easily defeated West Ham 2-0.
During City’s victories over Crystal Palace, Wolves, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United, he went on to score four hat-tricks.
The Norwegian international has been effective in front of goal this season, but he has also managed to provide six assists to his City teammates.
