Spain became the first nation to ever win the Women’s World Cup on Sunday. In Sydney, Jorge Vilda’s team defeated England 1-0, a victory that may have been more convincing had Jennifer Hermoso not missed a penalty in the second half.
Olga Carmona, the captain of La Roja, scored the game-winning goal. Her goal in the 30th minute separated the two teams, and when she spoke after the game (via Marca), she was obviously overcome by emotion.
Although England is a fantastic squad, this was for us. We were clear on what we wanted to accomplish. I can’t even speak.
“(My celebration) was for the recently deceased mother of one of my best friends.”
With this victory, Carmona and the rest of her colleagues have undoubtedly earned eternal fame, much like the men’s team did in 2010 when they also won. It is a fantastic moment in Spanish football and will be remembered for a very, very long time.
