Defeat Can’t Dull Brilliance: Newcastle‘s ‘Superstar’ Scripts Champions League History
The goal was to defeat AC Milan and make it to the competition’s knockout stages for the first time in the team’s existence. And after Joelinton put the Magpies the lead, that seemed very much a possibility.
Ultimately, our European odyssey came to an end as the Serie A giants made a comeback in the second half, eliminating Newcastle from the Champions League.
Although it has been an amazing journey, the rollercoaster has come to an abrupt and painful halt.
We shared the lowest spot in the group with Manchester United as a result of the loss. Two English clubs have finished bottom of their respective groups in the history of the Champions League.
One tiny historical moment, in spite of the suffering, suggests that the Magpies have a bright future ahead of them.

Lewis Miley creates history by assisting in the Champions League.
For the seventh straight game, Lewis Miley was included in the Newcastle United starting lineup, making his first-ever Champions League start at St. James’ Park. For the 17-year-old, it was quite the occasion.
He created another amazing black-and-white exhibition, unconcerned by the immensity of the work at hand, just like he had in Paris.
He was also instrumental in the goal, laying the groundwork for Joelinton to give St. James’ Park its first goal.
What a deft pass that was. Eliminating all of the energy from Anthony Gordon’s through pass, he helped Joelinton compose himself and finish what is likely his greatest goal while wearing a Newcastle shirt.
With this assist, Miley has now tallied two for the season, with this one truly making history.
Miley has surpassed Theo Walcott as the youngest English player to ever receive an assist in the Champions League. With his assist, the Toon midfielder surpassed Walcott’s record of 17 years and 250 days during his time with Arsenal, coming in at 17 years and 226 days.
Even though the evening ended in sadness, Miley will always remember it. He received a historic assist while starting a Champions League match for his childhood club at St. James’ Park.
Although it wasn’t enough to move on, Miley’s game on this stage will most likely not be her last. Given that the “little superstar” has already demonstrated his eligibility at this level of play, Newcastle and he have a very bright future.
“I’m devastated by the outcomes in Australia; I wish I could go back and make changes there. I’m not feeling guilty about this procedure at all.
“Everyone has the right to hold their own beliefs. I have no power over what others think. I’m content with what I did because that’s all I can manage. It doesn’t bother me in the least. I have no control over people’s judgements if they feel that way.
