Canelo Alvarez, the undisputed champion, versus David Benavidez is one matchup that fans are hoping to witness in the super middleweight class.
Although Benavidez has long been in a strong position to confront the Mexicans, his attempts to force a contest have failed.
It seemed like Benavidez would finally get his chance at super middleweight glory because Alvarez’s plans for 2024 are still unknown, but promoter Sampson Lewkowicz said that the fight will not take place.
Lewkowicz said, “No,” in response to a question from ProBox TV regarding whether or not Alvarez and Benavidez would square off in 2024.
Due to his failure to defeat Benavidez, who was the best fighter at the time, Canelo Alvarez will leave a tarnished legacy.
Canelo claims he wants the best fights, but that’s the best fight, so I think the kids, maybe even the grandkids, will ask him why he didn’t fight Benavidez one day.
“Now he says he’s going to fight an American [in Las Vegas on May 4], at one moment in the contract it was [Jermall] Charlo, now we don’t know who the American might be.”
