Yesterday saw the arrival of the German national team in Herzogenaurach, where they will start their last preparations for the European Championships this summer. Joshua Kimmich took some time to talk to the media about Monday’s friendly versus Ukraine, the atmosphere in the camp, and other topics as the training camp got began.
Joshua Kimmich on the cheerleaders during practice: Seeing so many people in Jena was wonderful. The ambience was superb. Yesterday in Herzogenaurach, the fans were waiting for us in the pouring rain, and it was just as good. It’s evident that people are eager to get started, and the enthusiasm around the competition serves as a major source of inspiration for us.
…be ready for the friendly on Monday: On the field, we’re attempting to bring everything together. The youngsters from Barcelona and Leverkusen joining us for training has been beneficial. It’s unfortunate, of course, that four players are still absent. It all boils down to winning; during the March internationals, it was evident that our two victories greatly boosted our spirits. To continue the momentum and the present upbeat attitude, we therefore aim to win against Ukraine.
at adidas headquarters: I quickly became comfortable here; currently, our rooms are just next to a pitch. There are excellent conditions and it’s the ideal location for us to get ready.
…as a full-back: Compared to playing as a holding midfielder, there are a lot of differences in the things a right-back must perform. However, I’ve played there a lot previously, so I was able to adjust fast. Of course, I have a number of options at my disposal to ensure that I’m appropriately prepared.
…consistency in team selection: Since it’s the only method to forge relationships on the field, it was wise of us to start the same starting XI twice in March. Of course, it’s also feasible to replace one or two players, but in that case, it’s critical that our team be able to make up for it. Most importantly, we are able to substitute any player. To win, we must function as a cohesive unit.
…the significance of the initial game: I’ve already touched on the significance of a tournament’s opening game a few times. How we play our debut game will determine a lot about the atmosphere in the camp. To create a good vibe, we must ensure that we win that game. Should you lose, uncertainty will start to surface and the pressure will start to build. We’re taking these friendlies very seriously because of this, and afterward we can concentrate on winning our opening match at the European Championships.
…the attitude in the Germany side: The fact that we won our games in March has undoubtedly contributed to the upbeat vibe. We’re desperate to maintain this going into the EUROs, so I hope it stays that way after Monday. The mood is totally dependent on whether we’re winning.
