Julian Alvarez’s future at Man City may not be bright, as Fabrizio Romano has revealed two intriguing tidbits about potential future destinations for the disgruntled Argentine.
When Alvarez, 24, signed for River Plate of Argentina during the winter window of 2022, he only paid £14 million. When the adaptable forward arrived at the Etihad six months later, he soon made a joke of that number.
Alvarez finished his debut season at Manchester City with 17 goals in all competitions. In addition to adding the World Cup to his already bulging trophy chest, the frontman hoisted the triple.
Alvarez scored 19 goals in the 2023–2024 season, building on his stellar debut season in England. Alvarez is a prolific scorer, but he is by no means a consistent starter.
Naturally, Erling Haaland is ranked ninth when appropriate. Alvarez is capable of playing behind the striker, while Phil Foden and Kevin De Bruyne perform best in that position.
Alvarez was consequently forced to make more cameo appearances than he would have preferred at this point in his career. Alvarez is ultimately dissatisfied with his playing time at Manchester as a result.
Major talents might potentially be let go by Man City if they feel it will benefit them more. Indeed, players like Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sane were both sold while in the height of their careers, and large sums of money were appropriately received.
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims that a number of elite teams are starting to realize there is a chance to sign Alvarez.
Both PSG and Atletico Madrid are in the hover, and the latter three have a hole in their front line that needs to be filled by Kylian Mbappe.
But Romano was quick to emphasize on X that, should Man City approve a deal, Alvarez may very well end up playing for another English team.
Major players like Gabriel Jesus (Arsenal) and Sterling (Chelsea) have recently been allowed by City to join formidable domestic rivals. Romano did not identify which English teams are leading, although it seems likely that they are the best.
Indeed, only the best in the Premier League can afford the move, with Alvarez reputedly valued by City between £70 and £80 million.
The future of Alvarez is at a crossroads
“Several clubs have approached Julián Alvarez, with Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain expressing interest,” Romano reported.
No talks or ideas as of yet, but a number of English clubs are interested. Man City wants to keep Julian, and discussions about that will take place with his team.
Without a doubt, the negotiations Romano mentioned will focus on future playing time guarantees. If City is unable to guarantee Alvarez a regular starting role, the Argentine may try to depart.
Regardless, Romano then provided an update stating that City will never consider a loan departure.
Alvarez can only have two possible endings this summer, according to the reporter: he can either stay at Man City or be sold permanently.
Complete sale or failure
Romano said to Caught Offside, “In terms of interesting cases, keep a close eye also on the situation of Julian Alvarez.” In recent days, there have been a lot of rumors, particularly around Atletico Madrid.
“Let me make one thing clear, guys: as of right now, Manchester City is not considering loaning Julian Alvarez out, and I can assure you that this will remain the same message throughout the entire transfer window. That’s the main point.
“[..] As a result, numerous teams are requesting details regarding Julian Alvarez. Why? as they are aware that Julian wants to play more, according to people who are also close to the player.
“If the player chooses to request a new opportunity, he might be among the unexpected names for the summer transfer window, but it really depends on Manchester City.”
