In Saturday’s 4-1 victory over Southampton, playmaker Kevin De Bruyne of Manchester City handed off his 100th Premier League assist.
As the Gunners take on Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, City closed the score to five points behind league-leading Arsenal.
Erling Haaland scored his 43rd goal of the season, heading in De Bruyne’s cross to give the Premier League champions the lead at St. Mary’s after a disappointing start.
When Gavin Bazunu, a former City custodian, saved Jack Grealish’s early effort, City’s lead was increased by Jack Grealish. Haaland then added a third goal in an impressive manner.
Prior to Julian Alvarez’s goal from the penalty spot, Pep Guardiola’s team trailed by three goals after Southampton had pulled one back.
De Bruyne was asked if he knew he was close to hitting 100 Premier League assists coming into the encounter in a post-game interview with Sky Sports.
The Belgian international claimed, “I was aware of it because there was a lot of chatter about it online.
De Bruyne reached the milestone 56 games before former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas, making him the player in Premier League history to reach it the quickest.
The four-time Premier League champion continued, “I just try to create as many chances as I can; I don’t compare myself to other players.”
Before to their Champions League quarterfinal first-leg match against Bayern Munich at the Etihad Stadium, City stretched their winning streak to eight games across all competitions.
In excellent form going into the match, Erling Haaland and Julian Alvarez have been credited by Kevin De Bruyne for reaching the 100-assist milestone.
“I get the helper credit if they (the forwards) score. Although I’m content, winning is what matters most, he remarked.
