After breaking the Premier League record for most goals scored in a season, Erling Haaland of Manchester City responded to Alan Shearer’s compliments.
In the Blues’ 3-0 victory over West Ham on Wednesday, the 22-year-old scored for the 35th time in the top flight, making history. He broke Shearer and Andy Cole’s previous record of 34 goals in their greatest seasons, which they both held, with his second-half goal.
Even if his Match of the Day coworker Gary Lineker had made fun of him for losing his championship, Newcastle great Shearer was quick to congratulate Haaland on the amazing achievement.
A Premier League record for Erling Haaland, Lineker tweeted, tagging Shearer. 35 goals. That is crazy. Alan Shearer is in our thoughts during this trying time.
Couldn’t have wanted it to go to a nicer guy, the Magpies legend remarked in response. It only took 28 years, yay! He is superior.
Haaland responded, “Thank you legend!” in appreciation for the compliment.
Shearer scored 34 goals for Blackburn Rovers during the 1994–1995 campaign, while Cole accomplished the milestone with Newcastle United the previous year. Haaland still has a chance to surpass Dixie Dean’s record of 63 goals in a season in the top division. The Norwegian star has 51 goals in all competitions this season, and City may still have nine games left.
The Norwegian star said that he ‘does not worry’ about goal-scoring records despite having a chance to break the long-standing mark.
After the game, he said in a statement to Sky Sports, “I don’t think of this, I sleep tonight and then I think about three points against Leeds. I’m going to go home right now, play some video games, and then go to bed.
On Saturday, Leeds will play Pep Guardiola’s team at the Etihad after the Whites selected Sam Allardyce as their new manager on Wednesday.
